Sensex, Nifty off day's low; Bank of India sinks 11%

The BSE Sensex traded off the day's low after earlier falling by as much as 300 points. The Sensex recovered over 150 points from the day's low, while the Nifty recovered 45 points from the day's low at 6,027.25.

As of 3.05 p.m., the Sensex traded 150 points or 0.7 per cent lower at 20,497, while the Nifty was down 0.8 per cent at 6,073.55.

Buying interest was seen in Consumer durable stocks such as Titan, which gained 4 per cent after earlier dropping as much as 5 per cent.

On the Nifty, Bharti Airtel was the top gainer, up 2.15 per cent after analysts cited a return of pricing power in the voice market. Voice pricing rose 1 per cent quarter-on-quarter, Nomura said.

Tata Motors was the other Nifty stock to rise over 2 per cent. State-run BHEL and Gail India and mortgage lender HDFC were the other big gainers on the Nifty.

However, selling pressure on banking stocks continued. The Bank Nifty was down 2.6 per cent. PSU lender Bank of India traded 11 per cent lower after reporting disappointing quarterly results. Profits fell 27 per cent on account of higher provisions for bad loans.

State-run Bank of Baroda and PNB traded with 4.4 per cent and 3.8 per cent lower respectively.

DLF was the top Nifty gainer, down 4.7 per cent.
